Choosing which inner design to work on
Today we put all of our chosen designs on the big table for everyone to see and evaluate. we were given green post it notes and told to stick them on which designs we liked best for inside Olio. Which page they think each person should work more into. I got six stickers on my bird one and one on my whistle one. So this suggests I should work more into the bird one in future.

Ideas for portraits - moving away from drawing people, as I'm finding it so challenging.
![]() |
| I find my eyes my best feature - perhaps I could use this one? Its perfectly representative of my style, it doesn't need a symmetrical twin in the composition and I love the simplicity. |
![]() |
| I love pugs, and as I can't use my logo, I tried redrawing a pug. yes it looks like one, but it looks too sad. I love the just plain brown coloring - less is more. still undecided on this one yet |
Another idea for cover - folk tales - story's - mythical beasts - dragons
I like the colors and the idea of Olio being written in the smoke in a way - and I like the simplicity. Could do with tidying up completely and using thinner lines though. I do like this one though

Another idea for the front cover
An Idea I've had in my head for about a week now; folk tales, stories....etc...how the brain imagines. that is the inspiration for this piece - also surrealism. Its a bit Alice in Wonderland-y.

| (1) My inspiration -Terry Pratchett's disc world. flying turtle ect - he also, in another book of his, writes about a giant whale falling from the sky, thinking about his life. |

ideas for self portrait

| love the colors and comp again but don't like the face. eyes are too far apart and wonky. |
![]() |
| again - good composition but bottom lip sticks out too far and eyes look too old with that shading on the side; looks like wrinkles |
![]() |
| way too dark |
![]() |
| lighter colours - but now too pale. |
![]() |
| nice colours - too pale though and derpy eyes. |
![]() |
| Oddly I like this one - even with the glowing lines. It looks a bit rough but I like the composition and the colors. It needs the bit of lightness on the lines- I think it makes it pop more. |

| playing around with colours - way too blue |

Looking into proverbs
I tried looking in the 'Penguin dictionary of proverbs' for my proverb but I can't find anything on mine. The book was by Rosalind Fergusson - second edition. Published by the Penguin group in 1983.
ISBN 0-140-51478-3
pages 73 - 76
Section 51
Proverbs on drinking:
Many words would have much drink
Salt beef draws down drink apace (apace means quickly)
A drunken man is always dry
Ever drunk, ever dry
He that goes to bed thirsty, rises healthy
ect - but Even though I scoured every page three or four times each - I simply could not find anything about my proverb. It also was just a book of proverbs - not any explanation or history behind them.

Ideas for front cover
colour ideas
Not sharp enough to be a front cover image. too boring. I tried to go Salvador Dali style and do some brains which are really hot air balloons and do them floating over a desert. The brain represent how people think about proverbs and things in life; wisdom, ect. I like the idea but its not....right, too simple. would need to look more realistic if I wanted to go down the Surrealist route.
What does my proverb mean?
The closest thing I could find to my proverb, which I assume means the same thing; is you can't have your cake and eat it it too. This means that you can either do one of two things , but its impossible to do both. If you eat the cake you won't have it anymore. Or if you have it, you can't eat it because you won't have it. (1) Or it could mean that something is bittersweet. you may have wished it to happen, but with unexpected and unpleasant circumstances or ways.
(2)"I want to lose weight but I don't want to change my eating habits" says Fred -
"you can't have your cake and eat it" replies Maggy

That was all the research I could find on that particular proverb. Human being's are simply not able to breathe and eat or drink at the same time; else the water would go into our lungs and we would drown ( could draw someone drowned underwater?) Perhaps I could draw mermaids! They can breathe undwerwater hypothetically they should be able to whistle too! I could draw a bar scene but have them all as mermaids.

Front cover brief
The uni logo must be on a plain background and you can incorporate the letters Olio 12 into it but only do it if you are confident enough that it'll look good. . Look at old Olio designs
The lettering on the sheet you have been given is just a template - do your own. You can make the image full bleed if you want (draw it to the corners outlined outside the template rectangle) Or if you wish it to have a white border, just do it to the line.
SUBJECT:
you can do your proverb as an idea, IF YOU WANT. or wisdom, folk wisdom, wise man/woman, fable, or any imagery that is a strong advert for your work. NO SNOW - NO CHRISTMAS IDEAS AS IT WILL BE PUBLISHED AFTER CHRISTMAS, AROUND MARCH OR JUNE TIME!
Feedback group work next thursday at 10am.

Olio Tutorials
George told me she likes the idea of the 'big drink - sea' and to explore that theme more
She loves the digital experimentation and told me to continue with that.
She likes how I've experimented with portrait.
She likes the teapot idea and thinks its more interesting and surreal - told me look more into it.
Things to do:
Look at the origin of similar phrases.
More narrative based idea - look into surrealim?
More thumbnail ideas - following the least obvious response
Look at psychedelic art and surrealism.
